The passage of time is the one thing that seems to continually astound us. We are farther away now from Madonna writhing on the floor in a cheap wedding dress at the MTV VMAs than that event was from D-Day, for example. How can it be true, when we are essentially the same person, albeit in slightly older casing? These random facts remind us that the world continues to spin, whether we like it or not. (Note: correct at time writing; there’s every chance the planet will have stopped by publication.)
I don’t think much about anniversaries other than my own, but I noticed last week – thanks to the reminder from Ian Wade’s pop appreciation account WAFR – that ‘Spinning Around’, Kylie’s return to the pop radio fold after a good seven years exploring less commercial alternatives, was twenty-five years old, released toward the end of June 2000. This could mean only one thing (to me): I have been gay for a quarter of a century.
