This show sounds like everything I hate: ignorant, sweaty men; shouting; dirty surroundings; cooking (I hate to cook). Definitely passing on it.

Absolutely loved it, yeah lots of shouting swearing etc but you can’t judge characters on 1/2 episodes, shud have stuck with it, Christmas Day in season 3 was one of the best episodes of any programme I have ever seen with a real cameo by Jamie Lee Curtis

I loved some of the character development over the two series - I’m not too fussed that it is too obvious for some (I love a bit of exposition and happy endings!). We devoured both series very quickly. There are two v stressful episodes, one in each series - The Review and Fishes - definitely outliers to rest of series.

PS I know a lot has been written about this but I find Carmy v hot even though not conventionally fit. Perhaps I’m just bedazzled by his biceps. X

I yelped at the thought of going straight to Fishes!

Great review. Can definitely understand you feeling that way after watching the pilot. I almost didn't carry on watching, and tbh, I wasn't all that bowled over by the whole of the first season.

But I'm with Laura - it's worth it for Season 2, which is really very different (apart from "Fishes", ironically - which is more the outlier episode of Season 2 rather than a typical one). It's much quieter (at least some of the time) and goes off in some quite unexpected directions. I'm certainly glad I stuck with it.

But different strokes for different folks. I just saw Oppenheimer for the third time, so what do I know?

The characters do not always go in the direction you predict. And Season Two is wonderful. Especially <insert any one of three standout episodes here>. And the ending. OMG.

However opinions are all valid, and I love your reviews! More please 🤓

I felt very similar after watching the pilot, and pretty much the entire first season. BUT season two is brilliant, and much less shouty, I promise!

Richie is VERY hard to take! I stuck with it and loved it but can completely see your POV. Excellent writing as always. If you want something full of every single cliché that's out there but with very clean work surfaces try Sweet Magnolias :-)

I felt the same but stuck with it, now just getting around to watching S2, slowly though. Some of the writing/dialogue is just too slick to feel authentic and even as a non-hospo person I feel baffled by some of their decisions but hey ho, it's an entertaining rollercoaster of a show.

I was on the fence about watching this, but now I'm sold!

I haven't seen the pilot but I stated to watch it and to me it's the vast amount of aggression (passive and active) that is difficult to handle. I stopped in the middle of episode 3. I might get back to it. Or not.

I love your "slightly aardvarkian" description of Carmy, which takes me back to an old childhood cartoon about an aardvark. So: Possibly lovable but weird. It fits.

Somehow, I thought Sugar was an ex girlfriend of Carmy's. That she should be his sister instead makes sense.
